Types of Power Supplies
| |
A power supply is what people call a device that supplies energy, usually
electrical energy, to a device or electric load.
Some types of power supplies convert electricity from one form to another, while
other types of power supplies actually supply the electricity themselves.
One example of a power supply that would convert energy is the power supply
plug-in for a portable musical electric keyboard. These usually need DC adapters, because
they are built to run on DC power.

So, they utilize a power supply that converts AC to DC when plugged into a wall outlet, thus
powering the keyboard with the appropriate amount and type of electricity.
However, a power supply could also be an actual source of power for a device. For example, if
you have a flashlight that runs on AA batteries, then the AA batteries themselves are actually referred to as
the power supply. Another way to think of this is in terms of a power source like solar power. A house that
runs completely on solar power relies on a power supply made up of solar panels.
As you can see, the term “power supply” could actually refer to any number of different
applications. For this reason, it is important to figure out exactly what type of power supply you need
before you go out and buy one. Here are some steps to take that may help to make the process of choosing the
right power supply a little bit easier on you as a consumer.
First, figure out whether you need a power supply that converts or provides the necessary power.
Second, read the manual and/or instructions that may have come with the device to see if you can obtain some
exact specifications as to the type of power supply needed. For example, is a certain type of converter
necessary? What size of batteries needed?
If you do not have a lot of information to go on, you can always search the device itself for a
model number or some other kind of identifying mark, such as a 12 volt power supply. If you can
locate a serial number, model number, or product number, then you can likely get in touch with the
manufacturer to find out exactly what type of power supply is needed for the item.
Some devices are pretty standard. For example, finding the right kind of batteries for a
standard flashlight is probably going to require no more than a little guess-work. However, figuring out
something like a power supply for a laptop computer might be a bit more difficult.
