If you live or work in a place that has any technology or machinery whatsoever,
you might find yourself needing a power supply to convert your AC power to DC
power.
Some equipment requires DC power at a certain voltage, and others will require a
12 volt DC power supply to get it running. But before you can find the right 12 volt DC power
supply, you would also need to understand what AC and DC power is.
AC stands for Alternating Current. This type of power supplies electricity in
alternate directions. The charge may move forward, then backwards, then forward, and
backwards again over and over. This is the kind of power which is used in homes and
businesses. Most appliances with have are designed to take in AC power supply.
DC stands for Direct Current. This kind of power only travels in one direction. It is used in
most batteries, solar cells, and other machines. It is also used in phones with AC electricity. The
information travels using AC and the phone itself is powered by DC.
By converting AC to DC using a power supply, the voltage is controlled and regulated as well as
lowered to only 12 volts so that a certain piece of technology can work properly with the power.
12VDC Power Supply
To choose your 12 volt DC power supply (also known as 12 VDC power supply, or 12VDC
power supply), you will first need to know what kind of power your house uses. There are two kinds. First
would be 110-120 volts at 60Hz which is used in most of America and Japan.
The other kind is 220-240 volts at 50Hz which is used by nearly everyone else. Some adapters can
only work with one type, while others can work with both. The ones that work with both are labelled as AC
100-240. Otherwise they will say either 110-120 for North America and 220-240 for everywhere else.
Different 12 VDC power supplies come with different features. One feature that you should
definitely look out for and preferably find in your power supply is a circuit breaker. Circuit breakers help keep the power supply working
efficiently. If it overheats, then the circuit breaker opens and waits until the unit cools down. This stops
shorts and potential fires.
Other helpful features include fuse protection and an LED condition indicator. These also help
keep your power supply working properly and not breaking down. For added safety, you can also purchase a DC
slip over to protect the plug.

Depending on what you’re planning to use the power supply for, you may need a certain kind of
12VDC power supply. For example, if you plan to use the power supply for security cameras, there are specific
power supplies for that.
Another type of power supply is one that is used in cars to charge mobile phones and the like.
Some even come with cigarette lighters. These use the car battery’s energy. Most other kinds of technology
and equipment require the regular wall mounted power supplies, which can be plugged into a slot in the wall.
